How to Care for a Ceramic Coating

A ceramic coating protects your paint's shine for years – but only if you look after it properly. Here are the rules that matter most.

The first week matters most

A freshly applied ceramic coating is not fully hardened right away – it needs time to finish curing. For the first 5–7 days the coating is still "maturing", so be especially careful during this period.

In the first week, try not to wash the car and keep it away from rain and bird droppings. If dirt or water lands on the coating, wipe it away gently with a damp microfibre cloth, but do not use any harsh chemicals.

  • Do not wash for 5–7 days and avoid rain
  • Do not park under trees – bird droppings and sap are especially risky on a fresh coating
  • Wipe off any stray dirt only with a clean, damp microfibre cloth

Maintenance washing

Although a ceramic coating repels water and dirt, it is not "wash-free". Regular gentle washing is exactly what keeps the hydrophobic effect and the shine alive. We recommend washing roughly once every two weeks, or whenever it looks visibly dirty.

Wash only with a pH-neutral shampoo and the two-bucket method. Avoid shampoos with wax or "all-in-one" additives – they leave residues that gradually dull the coating's hydrophobic properties.

  • Wash roughly every 1–2 weeks
  • Use a pH-neutral shampoo with no wax additives
  • Stick to the two-bucket method and a soft mitt
  • Dry with a clean microfibre towel to avoid water spots

Avoid automatic brush washes

The biggest enemy of a ceramic coating is the automatic brush car wash. Spinning brushes leave a web of fine scratches (swirl marks) that damage the coating's surface and reduce its shine. Harsh, aggressive alkaline cleaners can also cause harm.

If you must use a car wash, choose a touchless one or, better still, wash by hand. Also avoid washing in direct sunlight and strong acidic or alkaline products, unless they are made specifically for ceramic coatings.

SiO2 toppers and what damages the coating

To keep the hydrophobic effect as strong as possible, you can apply a SiO2 topper or booster spray after washing. It refreshes the water-repellent layer and adds extra slickness and gloss. Use it roughly every few washes, following the manufacturer's instructions.

The coating is damaged most by bird droppings, bugs, sap and road salt left on for too long – their acidity can etch into the surface. Remove them as soon as possible. A quality ceramic coating, properly maintained, will easily last several years.

If you want to periodically refresh the coating or check its condition, AutoZone Detailing offers professional ceramic coating maintenance.
