Fabric and leather seats are cleaned differently. We explain how to do it correctly without ruining your interior.
First things first – thorough vacuuming
Before reaching for any chemicals, vacuum the seats thoroughly. Sand and fine debris left in the fabric act as an abrasive during cleaning and can grind dirt in even deeper. Do not forget the gaps between the seat and backrest and the seams.
A good vacuum often removes most of the dirt and sometimes wet cleaning is not even needed. This is an important first step for both fabric and leather seats.
Fabric seats: do not over-wet them
For fabric seats, use a dedicated upholstery cleaner or a gentle foam cleaner. Apply it sparingly and work it in with a soft brush – the goal is to dampen the fabric, not soak it. Excess moisture seeps into the foam padding and takes a long time to dry, which causes a musty smell.
Clean stains from the edges towards the centre so they do not spread. Tougher stains are easier to remove while fresh – do not leave them for long. After cleaning, blot up the moisture with a clean microfibre cloth.
- Apply cleaner sparingly – the fabric should be damp, not wet
- Work stains from the edge towards the centre
- Do not mix different chemicals together
- Test the product on a hidden spot before doing the whole seat
Leather seats: gentle, with conditioning
For leather, use only a leather-specific cleaner – no dish soap or universal alkaline products, which dry out and crack the leather. Spray the cleaner onto a soft cloth (not directly onto the leather) and wipe the surface gently.
After cleaning the leather, always apply a leather conditioner. It restores moisture and suppleness, protecting against cracking and sun fading. It is best to clean and condition leather a few times a year.
Drying and when to call a pro
After cleaning, the interior needs to dry well. Leave the doors or windows open and, if possible, run the ventilation. Do not rush to use the car with damp seats, so no unpleasant smell develops.
Set-in stains, deeply absorbed odours or a full interior deep-clean are better left to professionals – professional equipment (steam cleaning, extractors) cleans deeper and more safely than household products. AutoZone Detailing offers this kind of interior cleaning too, if your at-home results are no longer enough.
