A coating lasts longer with the right routine — coating-safe shampoos, occasional toppers, quick contamination removal and seasonal beading checks.
Wash routine for coated cars
For a coated car, a gentle wash every 1–3 weeks is ideal, depending on how you drive. Use a coating-safe shampoo — usually labelled pH-neutral or ceramic-friendly — so you don't strip the coating or its top layer.
Avoid harsh degreasers on painted surfaces unless you really need them, and always rinse thoroughly before and after contact washing.
Toppers and boosters
Many brands offer spray sealants or coating toppers that refresh hydrophobic performance every few washes. They're applied to a clean surface and buffed off with plush microfibre towels.
Used regularly, they extend the coating's life and keep the water beading strong between professional services.
Spot cleaning and contamination
Bird droppings, tree sap and bug residue should be removed as soon as possible, even on a coated car — left long enough, they can still stain or etch the coating and the clear coat beneath it.
For tar and iron fallout, dedicated removers work well, but follow the product instructions to stay coating-safe.
Seasonal checks
At least twice a year, check how water beads and sheets off. If it stops behaving the way it used to, the coating may need decontamination or a fresh topper. It's also a good moment to look for new swirls or chips.
If the beading has faded or you spot damage, AutoZone Detailing can decontaminate, top up or re-coat the car.
