How often to polish your car's paint, the signs it's overdue, and how ceramic coating lets you polish less often.
How often to polish your car
Most cars benefit from a body polish every 1-2 years if they're hand-washed and kept in a garage or under cover. If your car is often parked outside, washed at automatic tunnels with brushes, or driven through winter road salt, it needs polishing more often — sometimes every year.
Polishing isn't just about shine — it removes fine scratches, oxidation and paint defects that build up even with careful use.
Signs it's time to polish
A few clear signals mean your paint is due for correction:
- Fine swirl marks visible in direct light
- A dull, less deep paint tone
- Oxidation spots or matte patches, especially on dark colours
- Water no longer beads — the paint feels rough to the touch
How ceramic coating extends the interval
Applying a ceramic (nano) coating after polishing creates a protective layer that shields the paint from UV rays, fine dirt and oxidation, so the next polish might not be needed for 2-3 years instead of every year.
AutoZone Detailing's ceramic coating price starts from €130, and body polishing starts from €120. Combining a polish with a coating is the most cost-effective way to keep a deep shine for the long term. See the full service here: Ceramic coating.
A quick recommendation
If your car is garage-kept and washed carefully, a polish every 1-2 years is enough. If it sees heavier use, or you want the shine to last with less upkeep, it's worth adding a ceramic coating on top.
